24 Hour Fitness working out new design with Racquetball

San Ramon-based 24 Hour Fitness is moving from a model where partnerships have created a range of variations in its workout locations to a more-standardized format, the Contra Costa Times reports.

Last month the company opened its latest Bay Area location in Pleasanton, a gym highlighting the new model that Chief Executive Officer Carl Liebert is hoping to make standard for the chain.

The "super sport club" is located in the Pleasanton building that used to house the Tri-Valley Herald.

With 52,000 square feet, it includes a basketball court, a lap pool, racquetball courts and exercise equipment.

A similar club is set to launch in Walnut Creek next year.

German Nationals for the 30th time

German Racquetball will host it's 30th German National Racquetball Championships on January 28th to 30th. As always, the event takes place in Hamburg and players from all over Germany are invited and will compete in various age divisions. Entries are still accepted until January 26th 1700. 5-time National Singles Champion Trevor Meyer has already confirmed his participation in this event.

Imagine burning up to a thousand calories and hour and having fun doing so

Bob Jackson of Madison is an Advanced Level American Professional Racquetball Instructor and has played the sport since 1979. Employed by Head/Penn Racquet Sports, he was mentored by former world champion Andy Roberts and played collegiately at Memphis State University under U.S. Team coach Larry Lyles.
"For beginners, a team sport background will help you. Footwork is the key, and a lot of practice," Jackson said. "Honestly, the worse you are, the better workout you get. If you keep your feet moving and have fun, you really will burn up to 1,000 calories an hour."
Jackson has won Open tournament divisions all over the country and said it took him five years to win his first C bracket, which he did in 1985. But noticeable improvement can be made pretty quickly.
"Lessons are a great way to start and learn the game the correct way," said Chris Baker, a Florence native and the general manager of The Courthouse location in downtown Jackson. Baker and Bob Jackson are the only two licensed racquetball instructors in Mississippi.
"A basic racquet, glasses and racquetballs will only set you back thirty or forty dollars, and most facilities have equipment you can borrow," Baker said.
The Lakeland branch of The Courthouse has four courts. There are three at the northeast Jackson location, located just off Old Canton Road. Baptist HealthPlex in Clinton has a pair of courts, and you can play at the YMCA at I-55 and Fortification, and at the recreation center at Jackson State University.
"I'd say it takes six months of playing two or three times a week to get competitive," said Sammy Young of Brandon, who was introduced to the game by a college buddy in 1984. "I'm still playing once or twice a week. I see a lot of younger players (at the Lakeland Courthouse) in the Tuesday night leagues."
WAPT-16 chief meteorologist David Hartman played racquetball while in college at Penn State, then picked it back up in 1993 and has won many tournaments over the years. Like Young, Hartman played a lot of tennis in the past.
"The racquetball swing is with the wrist, while the tennis swing is with the entire arm," Hartman said. "You'll get better by playing better players and learning to anticipate your opponents' shots. There are lots of angles to learn."
Jackson, a billiards enthusiast, compares racquetball to shooting pool because of the angles. He said that more recreational racquets are sold today than ever before, even though tournaments are much smaller than a generation ago when Chuck Miner opened The Courthouse and brought the sport of racquetball to Jackson.
"There are not as many courts these days, so the tournaments are smaller," Jackson said. "But more people are playing, especially college kids."

European Championships 2011

The European Racquetball Federation (ERF) has set the date for the 16th ERF European Championships 2011 in Bad Tölz, Germany. The event will take place from August 1st to August 6th. Depending on the number of entries, the opening ceremony might be held on July 31st already. Players from 10 countries are expected to compete in this bi-annual European competiton. The European Championships consist of a team and an individual competiton for both, men and women. In addition, senior and junior championships will also be held at the same time. Bad Tölz is a town in Bavaria, Germany. The city resides on the Isar River, 670 metres above sea level. Bad Tölz is known for its spas, historic medieval town, and spectacular views of the alps. It is appr. 50 km south of Munich. The nearest airport is Munich International Airport. ERF

News from Ireland

Kingscourt Racquetball Club held a very successful beginners tournament in December. In all 18 juveniles took part and 32 players played in a mixed doubles competition.
The next tournament will be the Kingscourt Open on 15th & 16th January.

2011 Regional Qualifiers

The 2011 USA Racquetball Regional Championships & Road to the Finals will be held in 12 cities across the U.S. on selected weekends. Regional events will also serve as qualifiers for the 2011 USA Racquetball National Singles Championships held May 25-30, 2011 in Fullerton, CA. All participants of the 2011 US National Singles Racquetball Championships are required to qualify at either a recognized regional championship event or at your sanctioned state singles championship. Entrants must compete, not just enter to qualify for nationals.

National Singles and Pro Nationals Together

The 2011 USA Racquetball National Singles Championships and the Men's IRT Pro Nationals will both be held together under one roof at the The Meridian Sports Club in Fullerton, CA--May 25-30, 2011. The all-Lucite portable court will feature all of the top men's professional players from the IRT as they will be competing for the year end title of pro national champion. The amateur side of the National Singles Championships will feature over 600 players from all over the country competing for the coveted title of National Champion.

National Intercollegiates Expects Big Numbers

The 2011 USA Racquetball National Intercollegiate Championships presented by Penn Racquet Sports features nearly 350 of the best young college racquetball players representing 50 colleges and universities from across the country. Winners of the men's and women's singles #1 are named to the U.S. Adult National Team that competes and represents Team USA at all international and world competition

2011 National High School Championships

The 2011 National High School Racquetball Championships will be held March 2-6, 2011 in St. Louis, MO at the Vetta Sports-Concord. Beaverton High School will be the defending overall team champion along with more than 40 high schools from across the country. Players will be competing for coveted gold medals in singles and doubles divisions as well as one year appoinments to the USA Racquetball Junior National Team

USAR National Doubles Championships--Feb. 9-13--Tempe, AZ

The 2011 USA Racquetball National Doubles Championships will be held February 9-13, 2011 in Tempe, AZ on the campus of Arizona State University. This is the sport's premiere doubles tournament and everyone is invited to play. The tournament is presented by Head/Penn and offers doubles divisions for skill, and age+skill for men and women. The 2011 National Doubles will also be offering a 'NEW' division, the Centurion Doubles, (Open and A skill division) the combined age of both players that must add to be at least 100 years of age or more. The division is used in Michigan, Texas and other states with great success. This allows a number of fathers and sons to play together as well as coaches and mentors with students.
The Men's and Women's U.S. Team Qualifying division also determines one-year appointments to the U.S. National Team that will be competing in international and world events.


The entry deadline is January 19, 2011
